Broward Table
Tennis Club
Sponsorship Request
The Broward Table Tennis Club (BTTC) is a non
profit organization, founded in 1990 in Davie,
Florida. The club has two tables and nine members and play once a week.
During the years the membership and the number of tables grew. After a
hurricane destroyed the facility, the club moved to the gym at the Jewish
Community Center in Davie. The BTTC upgraded and bought 12 True Blue Killerspin
tables. After one year they had over 50 members and the players were
clamoring to play more than once a week. The J.C.Carter Park in Ft.
Lauderdale could only offer the gym for one night a week. Being split
between two locations, the BTTC purchased another dozen Killerspin tables. High
rent increases, poor lighting and other conditions forced another move.
BTTC Director Carlos Zeller
approached Marty Prager and Terese Terranova, who coordinates a junior program in
Coral Springs, to join forces and find a full time facility. In
September, 2008, the BTTC opened a new facility with 17 tables, open 7
days a week. Players come to train, take lessons or clinics,
participate in leagues, local and state tournaments and the Senior
Olympics. Players from Central and
South America visit for training
and hope to be one of the four training facilities in the USA.
The main problem
that young table tennis table athletes have is the lack of
dedicated, proper training facilities throughout the
USA and the lack of
good coaches. The
USA athletes are lacking national and international
competition and joint training camps with athletes of other
countries.
The Broward Table Tennis
Club can be part of the solution by supplying the proper training
facility, qualified coaches and training partners. The BTTC can stimulate
the growth of table tennis, membership, and provide competitive
opportunities to attain world class athletes. The BTTC is located in
South Florida, the gateway to Central and South America and a sunny
location for many European players trying to leave the freezing European
winter. BTTC membership is at 120 and climbing, including children from 7
years of age to adults in their eighties. The ratings range from 600 to
2500. Several international players stop in South Florida and train at
BTTC.
The facility is 14,700 sq.
ft. with 14 Killerspin tables. All courts have barriers. Three other
tables are dedicated to Newgy’s robots. It is fully air-conditioned and
illuminated with fluorescent lights. The flooring is wood laminate. There
is a lounge with a TV, a lunchroom and a small gym. There are handicapped
facilities. BTTC holds 11 two
star tournaments and 1 four star tournament a year. Marty Prager, named
development coach of the year and inducted in the table tennis Hall of
Fame, Terese Terranova, former world and Paralympics champion and Nelson
Navarro, former national coach of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Peru are the
coaches at this club. The BTTC has letters of two Chinese coaches interested in
being part of the coaching staff. A grant of $50,000 will
enable the BTTC to pursue the following goals for the coming year:
a) To develop a
premier South Florida table tennis facility
b) To stimulate continuing interest in table tennis
c) To become a regional training center
d) To increase membership
e) To develop programs
f) To increase tournament quality
g) To foster environment where the club grows and prospers. |
