Condolences to all Mike's family. I was shocked yesterday to hear of his death, from Jim Beckford, his coach. I finally met Mike at a US Open, and said it was nice to meet him after reading about him, and said I didn't know how he could play so well sitting down. He just smiled and said he didn't know how I did it standing up. Since then I've become a visually disabled player, and take heart from Mike's attitude even more. I wish I'd known him better.

I first met Mike in 1975 at Park Table Tennis Club in Los Angeles. It was the first time I had a match against someone in a wheelchair. Thinking I had a physical advantage, I soon realized that Mike was taking our scorecard to the front desk. Years passed, but the memory of Mike Dempsey did not. Several years later I found myself regularly practicing at Kushall
of America with "two" guys in wheelchairs. I enjoyed the time with
Andre Scott and Mike. Now having been away from table tennis for many
years, I would have to see how Mike's rating changed in every issue
of Table Tennis Topics magazine. I was a secret admirer not only of
Mike's athletic abilities, but also his calm leadership and wisdom. I
would bet that Mike had many secret admirers that you do not know
about. Shannon, my prayers go out to you and your son. May God bless
you.

I didn't know Mike but I feel he was a
swell person, blessed by God's great hand.
I am connected to Mike only by a surname as I too, am a Dempsey.
Rest in peace my friend. Blessings always, a friend in namesake.

Michael Dempsey was an very dear friend of
mine for 30 years. He was just a good guy. The last years of his life
were the best. Henry was a blessing and Mike lived happy. I am
saddened at his death, however the Pearly Gates opened wide for him.
Our deepest sympathy to Shannon and Henry.
